Mr. Splatter is entitled to his opinion, but I think the no-minors beta testing is going to go over really well in WFTDA. As a frequent ref and NSO (non-skating official) for WFTDA gameplay, penalty tracking is a nightmare, and ensuring that all minors are accounted for during the 30 seconds between jams is difficult. Keeping minors straight leads to many official time outs, which leads to stops in gameplay, which leads to disgruntled fans and skaters. And if it doesn’t get the official approval from WFTDA, I bet many leagues will start playing no-minors of their own account… until they discover how much fun MADE is, of course!
I would love to agree with you Holly but I don’t see it truly being successful. I think they will say it is to save face. It might be successful if they also loosen up on all the penalties. Otherwise you are going to have a game of nothing but people sitting in the box. For instance the mouthguard thing, that alone can not land you out of play and in the box. If they revise all that, oh and the, more than 2 people in the box at a time thing, then maybe. But I have a feeling this will just create year’s of more loopholes. The culture of WFTDA at the moment seems to be very loophole driven, and how do you beat that out of a whole subculture?
I think WFTDA will go for the no minors rule, it has seemed to illicit a lot of positive reactions from all the beta testing. However, I do think this could lead to some skaters abusing this since now illegal contact will no longer garner a penalty unless it affects position of play. Hopefully that doesn’t happen though. There may need to be some revisions in ref training if it is adopted to make it most successful.
I like Made’s approach of every penalty issuing a box trip. We actually do have minors, they are just less time than major penalties. Minor penalties in a made game are the majority called. majors will get you 2 minutes in the box and they are for using excessive force, as defined in the rules and for team penalties.
another interesting approach on penalties is WORD rules used by la and sd derby dolls. In this rule set an offender is never sent to the box mid jam, penalties are assessed between jams and time served is only as long as the next jam. that as well seems like it would cause a lot of official time outs, but hey it seems to work well for them!
I actually don’t mind that WORD penalty rule…if you noticed our refs actually do that alot (wait to the break to access a penalty) if it is going to impede the flow of the game…so its like one half dozen of the other. Since our penalty system isn’t broke I don’t know if they will ever consider changing it to something similar to WORD’s, but I don’t think it would be a bad thing if they did.
i liek the idea of the time served being only as long as the next jam in WORD’s approach. Their jams are only 60 seconds though, i guess in WFTDA or MADE that wouldn’t work b/c you could possibly end up spending more time in the box than you should have.
MADE is a progressive style of Roller Derby, based on the original standardized ruleset.
In a MADE game:
*There is no slow pack
*Pivots can break
*There is one whistle
*There are no "minors"
*There is one start line
*There are no excessive penalties
*Lead Jammer is whichever Jammer is in the lead.
*Lead Jammer must be on their feet and within bounds to call off a jam.
*Packed full of strategy
MADE derby has been played in this form for more than 7 years, and this site is dedicated to those athletes who train hard and play hard under its name.
